Growing Whole Children in the Garden is here!

The world outside our windows is a laboratory to widen children’s understanding of nature, culture, place, and life’s other big ideas

Children love to be outside. Not all of us have gardens, but Dr. Lorie Hammond has created a book filled with projects, experiments and delicious recipes designed to guide teachers and parents in teaching children about nature in the back yard, garden or in a local park. The book is organized around the richness of each season, as celebrated in various cultures.

Dr. Lorie Hammond is a lifelong educator and the founder of Peregrine School, a progressive school in Davis, California that includes science and gardening in the curriculum for children from preschool through sixth grade. She believes that children learn through exploration and hands-on experience, and that the goal of education is to help each child find their unique path. This book shows teachers and parents how to use the world outside our windows as the laboratory to widen our children’s understanding of nature, culture, place, and life’s other big ideas.

About the book

The human story starts and ends in the garden. Children and their families thrive in gardens. Gardens feed our understanding of the natural world, our sense of wonder, and our souls.

I believe that all children have a purpose, and that the goal of education is to help them find their own unique path. This book is about understanding big ideas through the concrete experience of nature and place. I have been exploring gardens of all kinds with children for fifty years as a teacher, professor, and founder of an independent progressive school. This book is a tool to share the practices and reflections I have developed in community with teachers, parents and children of all ages.
